Tips for Effective Networking |
| Many people have misconceptions about networking. The cliche of wealthy men playing the power game on an exclusive golf course is no longer an accurate picture. The truth is, people network to build contacts, meet new friends and associates, find employment and to achieve goals. Effective networking can help you get clients, help you find employers or just to meet new people. Here are a few tips to help you with your networking: |
|
|
| Be Prepared |
» Always have business cards with you.
» Everybody is a possible network contact.
» Know the people you’re going to be networking with.
» Dress accordingly.
» Always wear your name badge on the right hand side. It is easy to read when shaking hands.
» Listen carefully.
» Stand tall, shake hands firmly, and make eye contact. |
|
| Be Open-Minded |
» Everybody is a potential contact in your network. » Network with everyone you get a chance to speak with. » If you don’t know anyone in the room, position yourself in a high-traffic spot (ex: bar, buffet table etc…)
» Pairs of people might be involved in private conversations, while 3 or more people are more likely to widen the circle for you to join in. |
|
| Don't Be Afraid to Ask |
» While introducing yourself, briefly explain what you or your business does.
» Ask questions like: “What can I do for you?” which will in turn return the question to you. That’ll give you a chance to explain what you do.
» Know what to say, when someone asks you what you do.
» Don’t be afraid to ask others what they do, and how it can help you or your business.
» Somebody out there has what you need. |
|
|

» Ask for a business cards, and offer yours in return.
» Upon receiving the card, read it quickly, and comment on the design of it, or the business location.
» Keep your business cards, and the ones you receive separate.
» Don’t put the business card in your wallet, or in your back pocket.
» Perhaps, mention getting in touch in the future.
» End with invitation to speak again, or “Nice to meet you”, “Will be in touch” etc… |
|
| Build your Network on Information, Not Status |
» Everybody benefits from good networks.
» Share your knowledge.
» Practice random acts of kindness towards your contacts.
» Always thank those, who made time for you. Even if you haven’t closed a deal, you’ve opened a door. |
| Set Realistic Goals and Commit Yourself to Them |
» Be honest with yourself. Find out where you are now, and where you want to be. Set achievable goals.
» Build and use your network to help you attain your goals. |
|
