On Tap with The Entrepreneur's Club...
Advanced Business Series Logo

Each month, members of The Entrepreneur's Club meet to learn from seasoned professionals, share knowledge and skills, and develop valuable business relationships.

At the November meeting, member David Sanders, founder of Camberwell House Law Firm, shared information regarding basic contract issues. When putting together a contract, be aware of the following points:
  • Make sure that who you think is a party is a party.
  • Clarify the role(s) of other people (spouses, subcontractors, etc.).
  • Who has the right to give instructions?
  • When it comes to the services to be provided, be clear, concise, and complete - uncertainty is not your friend.
  • Define the mode and timing of payment (deposits and increments). Include linkage to completion of work, withholding, and escrow...and be clear on what "completion" is.
  • Define how changes are handled for work outside the contract including work outside the original price or service.

Are you interested in becoming a member of The Entrepreneur's Club?

Attend a Water Cooler meeting to find out what we're all about.  All you have to do is pay for breakfast. Attend two meetings without obligation...and then we'd love to have you join us regularly.

Check out our Searchable Directory. You can be included, too...simply become a member of The Entrepreneur's Club - it's part of your membership fee.

Join us at our next meeting on Wednesday, December 16th at 7:00 a.m.

Changes to Employment Insurance for the Self-Employed

Changes to Employment Insurance
As a self-employed individual, your contribution to Canada's economy is important. Everybody wins when you choose to enjoy the benefits of creative freedom, the challenge and the self-satisfaction that often comes with self-employment.

It has no doubt crossed your mind that the lack of financial security can make self-employment less appealing. To encourage self-employment, the Government of Canada hopes to tackle at least some deterrents by introducing
the Fairness for the Self-Employed Act.

Through the proposed legislation (the Act), you, as a self-employed Canadian, could choose to participate in the employment insurance (EI) program and become eligible for the same special benefits currently available to salaried employees. (Read More)

Add local merchants to your holiday shopping list
Add local merchants to your holdiay shopping list

Allow us to make what we hope is a compelling argument for adding local merchants to your list of sources for holiday gifts and services this season.

The brick-and-mortar small-business owners in our community represent the backbone of our local economy. Small-business owners are often our friends and neighbors and the people with whom we worship. These "mom and pops" belong to our local service groups, coach our kids' athletic teams and serve on community committees. They have invested both their personal and professional lives here.

Here are some reasons for spending your money with local businesses.

· You will conserve energy. Why drive miles to a major mall or metropolitan shopping district when you can likely find what you need only a mile or two away? In addition, the environmental impacts of packaging and delivery are non-issues if you buy locally instead of ordering something on the Internet.

· You will keep your money and your tax dollars in London. Studies have shown that for every $100 spent locally, $68 stays local. For every $100 spent at a national chain store, only $43 stays local. Sales tax dollars stay local as well, helping city governments pay for basic services such as police and fire protection, road maintenance, parks and recreation services.

· Local businesses generate local jobs. Income to those businesses is returned in the form of salaries, which are spent locally as well. And don't forget all those youth team sponsorships, raffle items, high school scholarships and other investments in our community that are made by local merchants. They don't have to do any of that, but they do because they care.

We're not naive enough to suggest you do all of your shopping locally this holiday season. Holiday ads certainly are appealing, along with the one-click convenience of buying on the Internet. But we would like to offer a compromise.

Choose three local businesses you would miss if they closed. Stop in, browse and perhaps buy a holiday gift or two. Then, commit to spending at least $50 per month, every month, at local stores. By shopping locally, you can save time, gas and money, and help our neighbor businesses at a time they need us the most.
