Welcome to the April 2010 issue of the Small Business Centre Newsletter.
On July 1st, 2010 the Retail Sales Tax and the Goods and Services Tax will be combined into a single value-added Harmonized Sales Tax. The Ontario Government has introduced this change to encourage economic growth and prosperity.
Your business will experience an immediate bottom line effect with the introduction of the Harmonized Sales Tax. How you prepare now will not only mitigate this effect but assist you in taking the right steps to maintain profitability and reduce administrative headaches. In this issue of our newsletter, we provide you with a checklist that will get you started on the right path.
To make sure we are adequately addressing the effect the HST will have on your business, we are planning more seminars and more information sessions before July. Check our website regularly and keep reading our newsletter for seminar dates.

| Are you HST-ready? |

Checklist for Ontario Small Businesses
On July 1, 2010, the existing provincial sales tax (PST) and the federal goods and services tax (GST) will be replaced with the federally-administered Harmonized Sales Tax (HST) in Ontario. The HST rate will be 13% (8% going to the province and 5% to the federal government).
To assist you, Canadian Federation of Independent Business (CFIB) has prepared a checklist of areas that you may need to address, as well as highlights of the general transitional rules. Given that the HST rules are complex and will affect various business sectors differently, this checklist should be used as a general guideline, designed to complement information provided through your accountant, the Canada Revenue Agency or the Ontario Ministry of Revenue.
