Skye Elder, Skye High Beauty, Self Care Society
Tell us about yourself.
My name is Skye Elder and I own a relaxation and beauty salon called Skye High Beauty, Self Care Society. I would have to say that it’s been a full life journey leading me up to this point. I can recall being around 5 years old and begging my Mom to go to her salon and was willing to do anything to come watch her transform people from their look to the way they felt. I would sweep, mop, fold towels, wash mirrors, anything to get a taste of the action. I apprenticed with my mother as a stylist all through my high school years and into my early 20's. Around 23, I questioned if my passion ran as deep as I believed OR, if I followed this path because my mom walked it. So, I decided to do what rational twentysomething year old’s do and I switched career goals right as my own hair career was emerging! I enrolled in school to become a physiotherapy assistant, I was great at it and I loved the schooling! The new education made me feel alive. I thrived in school with a 94% average and graduated with honours. I got into the field and thought..... what am I doing here!? I got into physio to still be able to connect with people and remind them to feel good about them selves. The medical field takes a specific type of person, I was not that person. I give endless recognition to those who excel in these fields however, it just wasn't for me. My creativity was aching to be active and I was ready for a journey of my own. I started a very small set up in my tiny 2-bedroom apartment, determined to carve my own path. I was stubborn and pushed through my many obstacles and here we are today! I am finally bringing my brand to life and ready to share it with the world. Taking care of yourself from the inside out, health and beauty. Skye High Beauty is the Self Care Society because we believe you have to put on your own oxygen mask before you can help others, so take time to take care of you.

Was there something that drew (or pushed) you into being an entrepreneur?
I always had a drive to be an entrepreneur before I even knew what that was. I never wanted to have a 'boss', I wanted a unified team working together to bring our passions to life. I never envisioned myself committing to a career that meant working for someone else. I always struggled with the same aspect repeatedly in different jobs and positions. I found myself continuously not feeling comfortable with certain expectations, whether it be the unflattering uniform or the feeling of wasting hours. This idea made me realize that my life belonged to someone else and I felt like I wasn't productively giving back and thought maybe what I was doing was meaningless. I wanted to help people and just make them feel good. Not being able reach people the way I am able to with my career was never an option for me.
What were some of the challenges you faced getting started and how did you overcome them?
Starting from scratch on your own is HARD WORK. I was building my first set up from my house and it wasn't much of a set up. It was a basic kitchen chair and an attachment from my kitchen sink so I could wash hair. Friends began to refer people and I turned the bedroom in my apartment into a mini salon with some second-hand salon furniture and some hand me down tools from my mom. I started my journey as an independent stylist. This would be my first of many big learning curves. Things started to grow as I started working with the Small Business Centre to learn how to better manage the many details I had never dealt with before. Every massive obstacle I faced I wasn't alone, the Small Business Centre helped me with everything. If my issue wasn't an area of expertise for my mentor, he directed me to someone at the SBC who was. I have come across location issues, financial issues, education issues, and throughout it all I am not dealing with it alone, the SBC was there to help every step of the way.
