Dan Heffernan, Heff's Hives
Tell us about yourself
My name is Dan Heffernan and I was born and raised here in London, Ontario. I am the father of two children (Matt and Abbey) and steward of millions of urban bees, specifically the Apis Mellifera.

Heff's hives opened officially in 2016 selling bee keeping supplies, wax, candles, honey and contracted beekeeping services. Heff's is a small-scale beekeeping operation focused on bee health, pure products, and currently employs only the bees. We have over a dozen beehives at the shop and we facilitate dozens more across London!
What led you to start this business?
I have always liked nature and as an avid outdoors person I had been aware of the issues facing the bees and moreover all pollinators, but I wasn’t doing anything about it. One day my daughter came to me and stated, “Dad, you must do something to help the bees.” This is my effort…it started with two hives and quickly grew to living with sometimes an excess of two million bees right in my backyard. The last few years I have immersed myself into everything “bee” and found out all kinds of things about the bees, nature, and myself along the way. What I have learned here and the problems I have encountered along the way have led to Heff's Hives- a full-service honey house, beekeeping equipment supply and one of the most fun aspects, local contract beekeeping.
What drew you to being an entrepreneur?
Once I heard that being an entrepreneur is like jumping off a cliff and building a plane on the way down. I have always had an entrepreneurial spirit, and have opened business' previously however, each was alongside my full time job. The better I got at one job, the worse I did at the other until i started with the bees. They have shown me a new way!
What were some of the challenges you faced along the way?
Thousands! Things are always changing, often new and never dull.....and well deserved down time for me consists of spending time in the woods, running, and spending time with friends.
