Kyle Maynard, London Fades Barbershop
Tell us about yourself.
My name is Kyle Maynard, and I’ve been a barber for just over ten years. I was educated at the Florida Barber Academy and got my hairstyling license at Marvel Beauty School. I have worked in many barbershops throughout London and Toronto over the years and have always had the dream to open my own.
Tell us about your business.
London Fades opened in the summer of 2017 in the old Pete’s Variety downtown London at 531 Colborne Street. Our location is over 100 years old, each barber chair in the shop is an antique, restored and made operational again. Our services specialize in modern styles ranging from your basic fades, innovative fades, designs, hot towel shaves, and line ups. London Fades is putting a modern spin on the timeless tradition of going to the barbershop.
What were some of the challenges you faced getting started and how did you overcome them?
Opening a business takes a lot of hard work, dedication, sacrifice and most importantly, passion. Getting London Fades started resulted in many challenges, and I discovered the key to success for my business was my support system. Friends and family dedicated their time to the success of London Fades. If you are passionate and persevere, your loved ones will do anything to help you achieve your dreams.
What is the #1 small business book/blog/website you would recommend?
The number one website/app I recommend for a small business is Instagram. Instagram has been a great resource to showcase my work, provide information to my clients, and attract new clients. Instagram makes it very simple to set up advertisements and target your specific audience. Having a strong presence on Instagram can help legitimize your business, so I strongly recommend dedicating some time to creating a robust Instagram strategy.
What advice would you give to someone starting a small business today?
The Small Business Centre was an amazing resource for me starting a small business. The Starter Company Plus Grant Program was fundamental in the Startup of London Fades. This program guided me through market research, a marketing plan, and financial planning. I would also recommend building relationships with people at City Hall, as there may be many licenses or agreements you need to acquire. Having some familiar names and faces at City Hall can go a long way when you’re looking for this information.
